There are 2 Comments to "The Asylum"
Asylum pulls off an impressive scare even without the detailed sets of some of my other favorite haunts. There are a ton of disorienting strobes and long stretches of eerie darkness. The patients lining the walls, crawling beneath you and shrieking wickedly are definitely off-putting and make you wonder if they really are actors or actually deranged.
It’s usually very crowded, which generally means you’ll catch up with another group if you walk quickly. I find this amusing, because usually the people in front of me are so terrified they can hardly work. It’s entertaining to me and a testament to the fact that this is a haunted house that does its job!
In 1978, Alice Cooper released an album called, “From the Inside” and it was based on his stay at a sanitarium in New York to deal with his issues. While I know I am digging into the time capsule for most of you, this album had more going on than it received credit for.
That being said, this year The Asylum has gone through some changes that are reminiscent of the essence of the above mentioned album.
If you make the mistake of running through this haunt with your eyes only half open you will miss the very core of the dementia happening within these walls. I say this because every time I have gone through this haunt, I have caught up to the group in front of me. Normally, this would be a complaint of mine, but not here. These various groups have become paralyzed by fear and literally are too scared to move. Eyes closed, screaming, squirming visitors are relieved when we come upon them and find the courage to move, following us of course! These people finish the haunt screaming, jumping and hiding their eyes as much as they can. I believe I see this consistently because of the set design and use of lighting and fog.
With a new floor plan again this year there were new twists, turns and nooks to tuck our deepest fears into. Add dizzying strobe light effects to some of these new spaces and you have a recipe for true, unsettling disorientation. This effect has been extended this year and the results are incredible and left me off balance.
Incredibly detailed makeup and masks were new this season and there is one in particular in the nursery that still gives me goose bumps thinking about it. Slow down and really take a good look, it is worth the effort.
I enjoyed this haunt a great deal although I was a bit confused as to whether I was inside or outside based on the walls/facades and the sound effects.
Score: 9.25
