This is a good haunted house to see in the Denver area. Lines are very long, so go early. Dark areas, a cool strobe effect and cool props make it worth the visit. Good design on some sets, and some neat props.
While 13th floor has its highs (incredible set design, props and makeup) and it’s lows (actors could have been more on their game, some rooms seemed out of place), overall this is a truly good haunt. I consider it one of the best I’ve seen in Colorado and the best in downtown Denver.
The beginning is stellar. The crumbling wall entryway where you wait with a man who gives new meaning to facial scarring is a great precursor to your experience. The pitch black elevator ride gets your heart racing and then you’re somehow transported through the same door into an entirely new place. It’s darn cool!
The rooms within are creepy and overwhelming in some spots with SERIOUS highs. A majority of the rooms make you feel like your deep underground. Water seems to be seeping in from the ceiling and everything feels cold and damp. Pipes run above your head, walls feel like caves, strange smells abound (is that mold) and terrifying sounds engulf your senses.
13th floor does a good job of touching on pretty much every fear. There are snakes, spiders, bugs, darkness, small spaces, doctors, monsters and gore. They ever hit the fear of heights in one room, which I LOVED.
This place was very crowded the night we went and towards the very end we did catch up with the group in front of us, which is always a bit disappointing. Fortunately it was at the very very end and didn’t throw off the experience very much. And I think part of the reason for it was because the group was so scared they couldn’t move forward!
13th Floor
Back for its second year, the 13th Floor has undergone some major changes on every level, and each one is an improvement.
The biggest change that was readily apparent was the size and layout. Size has increased by 50% which allowed for bigger scenes, some of which are larger than life and have to be seen to be believed!
Then comes set design. This was a vast improvement from last year and really created an eerie atmosphere. Brick tunnels and walls combined with the perfect amount of fog and amber lighting made for a delightfully scary experience. Although there were some dead spots that I felt needed something, and a couple of scenes that were too dark to see details, this haunt delivered on multiple levels. Narrow sets, filled with all manner of scary, gory, things help crank up the fear level, then dim lighting, actors and noises took hold and pushed me over the edge, literally. There is a walking on the edge illusion that has been flawlessly pulled off and pushed suspension of disbelief to the limit.
Take your time going through and really look at the sets and actors. There is a lot happening and the props and makeup are stellar. Heads hanging from the ceiling were the most realistic I have seen so far. I had to take a good, long look and the details are very authentic. Makeup and masks are in a word, extraordinary! I have never found pig masks and costumes to be the least bit scary and find them ridiculous personally. This one, however really stopped me in my tracks to get in close and really take a look. This was not just a mask; it was part of the actor. He truly looked as if he were some type of bizarre mutation between man and animal.
This was a great haunt that held most of the things that give me the creeps in one place. If you’re afraid of the dark and more importantly, what lurks in the dark with you, drop by the 13th Floor, get on the elevator and see what lies beneath!
