One of the Denver area’s classic haunts. Located in the spooky and deserted (late on the week nights anyway) Heritage Square near Golden.

This haunt is located in what looks a lot like an old building/house and the atmosphere outside it is perfectly creepy to get you stoked for your haunting experience.

I felt this year Spider Mansion was a little more intense than years past. More darkness, better sound design and a prevailing eerie vibe.

The twists, turns and small spaces of this haunt ensure that you will be surprised and unnerved by the actors close proximity. They do a good job of utilizing the darkness to catch you off guard and send shivers down your back.

Fun haunt, great atmosphere, cool classic haunted house theme, use of surprise and small spaces. Awesome sound design this year too!

Spider Mansion, known by enthusiasts as the best “Old School” haunt in town has done very little in recent years to change things up. This has been both good and bad for the haunt. Bad, in the sense that people want to see change, even subtle, and no change equals stagnant in most people’s minds. Good, in the sense that us “Old Schoolers” really like to take a step back in haunted house time and remember the way a great haunt was really built.
This year, there have been some changes at Spider Mansion that elevated it to new heights and amped up scare levels dramatically! Here’s what changed: Use of fog and lighting. More fog in areas that were previously clear has completely changed the sets from something we’ve come to expect to something we’re afraid of, something moving in the haze, just out of focus, waiting for you.
Lighting, or in this case, lack of, has increased the level of fear by at least 50%. Eerie enough before with the fog and well lit paths, dimming things down has created a terror of things unknown in the darkest recesses of our minds. While we were winding our way through in the dark, every one of my childhood monsters came to life and were lurking just ahead of me.
Acting has been completely overhauled as well. Actors have the energy and intensity to scare even the most hardened enthusiasts. Well timed, very loud noises added to the environment that by itself was scary, but with the sounds became terrifying.
My only disappointment was the ending. The final scene seems disjointed and out of place from the rest of the haunt which maintains theme well. There have been scenes in years past that delivered the desired effect; this ending however, does not.
If you’ve seen this haunt before and felt there needed to be change, this is the year to go! If you’ve never been here, take a trip back in haunt time and experience great scares that stay with you. Either way, dust off your childhood monsters and get reacquainted in the dark.

    Score: 9.25
