Field of Screams is really a mixed bag for me. All the walking through endless miles of corn is kind of hit or miss. That said there are some definite highlights this year.
The first TWO rooms are GREAT. If you’ve been in the past couple years you’ve seen them, but they’re SO good. It’s almost worth going to this haunt for that alone.
There’s a room along the way with a deranged masked man who was dismembering some poor girl and he pointed his finger at me and I was terrified of what was next. His acting was great and this room was gore-alicious!
The last scene we came upon was also really good, even if slightly by accident. We walked into a complete disaster zone. It looked like a scene from Texas Chainsaw MAssacre. These girls (who turned out to be other haunt goers) were on the ground crouching near grave stones and comlpetely losing their shit. So cool!
Major highlights here and there, with lots of corn in between. If you like corn, GO!
With new sets and scares The Haunted Field of Screams comes in as a major contender this season and delivered some great new ideas and scenes.
Right out of the gate my group was challenged to solve a puzzle in order to move on. We were able to solve it after some frantic searching and moved on to the next room and were faced with yet another challenge. While the second puzzle was easier, getting it done with an angry psycho in the way was quite a test.
While walking through the corn in between the scenes I encountered groups of actors in costume which I would have liked to have seen spaced out a bit more. The costumes and masks could also be done better than they are as some actors are wearing black pants, black hoodies and a mask. That, matched up with clusters of actors that merely yell detracts from the level of fear.
The scenes, scattered throughout have improved considerably from last year and provided some great scares and startle points.
Additions to the house set that include new lighting and sounds really raised the bar and the actor in the nursery was very creepy. There was another scene with a crazed maniac that likes to chop up his victims and throw their body parts. He was very intense and made a tremendous amount of noise that enhanced the entire scene. My favorite overall was the very bizarre kid in the crawl space. He came crawling up fast in my face while the strobe light was going and he made the strangest, creepiest sound I have ever heard a person make. It was something surreal and frightening and his strange makeup in the strobe light iced the cake.
Another scene put us in a pitch black space that was very difficult to navigate and then an actor provided the ultimate scare and squeezed his way in between myself and one of the other critics to separate us. Once he was in front of me, he leaned around her and scared her half out of her mind! It was great the way the actor was subtly aggressive and pulled it off!
If you enjoy semi long strolls through the corn with some good sets and scares thrown in between, this is a great haunt for the money.
Score: 8.5
