Length: 9City of the Dead is truly dead. Considering the location at the Flea Market, COD does an amazing job creating one of Denver’s best Halloween attractions. As soon as you enter the haunt you step into a world of zombies and creatures of the undead.
This is one of my favorite haunts due to the amount of passion and enthusiasm put into the attraction by the actors and staff. As you enter the haunt you are greeted by an array of different zombies and sets.
COD does best with their attention to detail, so if you love spooky eye candy this is the place for you. Also I really enjoy the masks, makeup, and costumes used here and I personally think they are the best in the state. Each actor/actress here is so well done with makeup and costumes that you have to actually pause and take an extra look at them to believe what you are seeing.
My favorite prop/set used here is the dead guy in the porta-potty. He smells totally putrid and actually looks covered in fecal matter. It’s totally disgusting and you feel you might puke. I think this haunt was done very well this year and it is a must see for the haunt-goer this year.

Length: 9City of the Dead is now in its second year at the Mile High Marketplace. I’m happy to say that they have improved the signage directing visitors from the entrance to the exceptionally large tent that houses the haunt. Getting lost should no longer be any sort of issue. Walking up to the tent is impressive but even more so once inside. This is a good haunt to visit during bad weather because the haunt and queue line are all housed indoors. The only outside waiting you may encounter would be possibly at the ticket booth.
This haunt provides a nice little bonus. Visitors are able to get snacks in line and do a bit of shopping from a few vendors before and after getting the pants scared off of you. As a haunt review team, we even stopped to get a Zombified Caricature of our group with one of the denizens of the haunt lurking behind us.
Upon entering the haunt, a military style character barked instructions to us regarding the rules of entering the netherworld and ushered us to be judged. In an impressive scene you are convicted of the crime of living and sent into the city proper through the police station. This scene contained a couple of my favorite actors in the haunt, the Judge is fantastic.
Once inside the city you are treated to plenty of eye candy. Old broken down trashed cars, trash all over the place, very detailed buildings, as well as even scene appropriate television shows. This definitely portrays exactly how I would imagine a city overrun by the undead would look. Everything feels dirty and uninviting and gruesome.
The use of other senses is also fantastic. You get smells that feel like they match the scene you are experiencing, example the bathroom, oh boy do the undead have quite the bathroom. Even some sense of touch is experienced to help suspend disbelief. Walking through the graveyard feels more organic under the feet than simply the hard concrete floor of the tent you almost forget you are actually under.
City of the Dead has some of my favorite characters in a haunt so far. They are very original and quite scary. You’ll see everything from strange fish like men with bright lights aimed right at you so that it’s difficult to exactly make out what he is, to monsters living in port-o-potties covered in who knows what. You’ll also experience very large and imposing monsters that make it quite difficult to walk past them. Every character has a certain eerie charm that obviously was thought about and wonderfully put together. I’m also happy to experience that his haunt put some thought into dialogue as well, rather than the stereotypical ‘boo’ and ‘grrrr’, which sadly infests many haunts.
Overall this is one of the top quality haunts in Denver and should be on anyone’s shortlist to visit.

Length 10Have you ever watched one of the countless zombie movies and thought, “That wouldn’t scare me”? I think we have all shared that thought at one point or another and have even worked it out in our mind all of the clever ways we would get away and kill all of the zombies to save ourselves and the world.
You will find that those thoughts will quickly leave you and the only predominant thought you will have is, “How do I get out of here?!?!” There is an abundance of flesh craving zombies here and they will stop at nothing to get their hands on you and sink their teeth into you!
Right out of the gate I had to face the judge and was condemned to walk the city streets because I was among the living. I always enjoy this scene and the actors within it. A bit more intensity here and I would have needed to change my drawers!
Set design is over the top again this year and nothing has been spared to shake your reality loose and submerge you deep within the nightmares that lay ahead. The layout has been improved and there is a much better flow from scene to scene that really enforces the illusion that you are walking the streets of a city overrun by zombies.
There are several scenes that really stayed with me and those include the barber shop, the donut shop, the dentists’ office and the nursing home. Smells within the nursing home were as real as they get and caused me to choke back a retch or two. That’s when you know you have authenticity!
Actors, once again, were doing a great job within their scenes, although I did encounter a couple that just made some loud noises or screamed at me. Personally, I prefer an in your face encounter and something more than screaming and “Grrrrs”.
Overall, this is an extremely good attraction with more than enough eye candy for even the most discerning visitor. If you have the nerve to be among the living, take a stroll through the City of the Dead and find out if you have what it takes to survive!

Length: 9This definitely makes my top-five list. You cannot go wrong with this haunt. There is so much going on, starting with the guy who greets you—the judge! He declares you alive and screams close to your face. I can almost feel his breath, and he gives me the creeps. As I enter, I feel like I’m in a city where things have gone majorly wrong. I don’t know how people got infected, but there are zombies walking around seeking the living ones. There is one scene I enjoy a lot—with the jeep. The vehicle is covered in cobwebs, and when I look inside, I see a couple in a tuxedo and a wedding gown. I don’t think they made it to the honeymoon! Another cool scene is the potty reeking like poop with a puppet sitting inside of it—at least I think it is a puppet until it comes after me and screams: “What a crappy job I have!” This guy looks like he is a prop at first—that is how good his makeup is.
I like the dentist room. This room is far from being sanitary. It is so disgusting to look at the poor dude on the chair getting his teeth pulled. Then the crazy dentist appears and makes a sound with the drill (you know that sound!) that makes my teeth clench. I hate going to the dentist, and this makes my fear worse. My favorite room is the one where an old lady is rocking on her chair with the TV on. It looks like an asylum home. It even smells like one—old and sweaty. After that room, there is a bathroom scene that reeks like somebody actually did some business there. My stomach is suffering at this point. The bad smell makes City of the Dead even more real to me.
There is so much to this haunt. The props are amazing. It has some great actors, but a couple of them got out of character, which is a downer for me. I would recommend you check out this city and experience all the craziness like I did.

Length: 9City of the Dead Haunted House is one of the best in Colorado. From the moment you step out of your car you hear the chainsaws revving up waiting for you and once you get in the tent it gets even louder. The fog in the tent makes it to where you can’t even see what you are about to step into. This is a cool effect that you don’t see anywhere else.
COD made minor changes that had a big impression. The streets were reorganized so it actually felt as if you were walking around a city instead of just one street. Also, it felt as if it took longer to get through the haunt. The rooms however did not change but the props still blew my mind. The people who helped build this in 24 days have gifted souls but choose to use it for evil!
The actors are better than ever this year. Even the most minor people aimlessly wandering the streets provided a scare. There was an increase of chainsaws this year and I am pleased to admit that I fell to the ground whilst being attacked so watch out! I was disappointed because the makeup/costumes seemed to lack from what I saw last year (I saw 2 T-Shirts and the back of the head wasn’t even touched) but if you’re scared you probably wouldn’t even notice.
Overall, this haunt is well worth the money! Get there early so you won’t have to wait in line for 2 hours, or invest the extra money for a VIP ticket to bypass the line.

Length: 10Talk about an in your face haunt! This haunt doesn’t ask for your full attention, it demands it! If you like a lot of action, actors up in your space, tons of props, a disorientating set design, and everything over the top, you need to visit City of the Dead.
One of the things I really like about this one is it follows a theme. You really are walking through a city…it just happens to be overtaken by zombies, but you will find every day places in this city…a court house, a school, a donut shop, even an old folks home! The acting in each location within this city was excellent! Each character played his or her part exceptionally well, and they all weren’t the same, which I like. You get a variety of acting, and not just the same old “boo” scares. Got to give a shout out to the judge…you rock!
I have absolutely no complaints on the props/set/special effects in City of the Dead. They had tons of disgusting things to look at and keep your curiosities flowing and your heart pumping. Everything was fully accompanied with sound, and smell effects as well, and even some textured floors bring in the touch sense as well! Also, the length was perfect…not too long and not too short.
The only thing that kept me from giving this haunt a perfect score is that for me personally, building the scares up in a more dramatic way is scarier than the constant in your face kind of scares this haunt offers. I think this city was deliberately made this way, and they do it well! Nice job COD!
